Found a Tick on You? Here’s What to Do
Tick season is here, and with it comes the need to stay alert and informed. If you find a tick attached to your skin, don’t panic — here’s how to remove it safely and protect your health.
How to Remove a Tick Safely:
Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to your skin’s surface as possible.
Pull upward with steady, even pressure. Avoid twisting or jerking — this can cause parts of the tick to break off and remain in the skin.
Clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol, or soap and warm water.
Do not crush the tick with your fingers. You can dispose of it by placing it in alcohol, sealing it in a bag, or flushing it down the toilet.
Help Track Tick Activity in Virginia
If you’ve been bitten by a tick, you can help monitor tick-borne disease risk in our region by participating in the Virginia Department of Health’s Tick Survey. This survey is for ticks found on humans only, not pets or animals.
